Government recruitment in India runs through several parallel systems, and knowing which one you are dealing with tells you what to expect. Central recruitment happens through commissions — UPSC for the civil and engineering services, SSC for most non-gazetted posts, the Railway Recruitment Boards, IBPS and SBI for banking. State recruitment runs through state public service commissions, subordinate services boards and police recruitment boards. And a large, less visible share happens through direct advertisement by individual institutions: universities, IITs and NITs, AIIMS and medical colleges, research laboratories, PSUs and autonomous bodies.

Direct-advertisement vacancies are the ones most people miss

Commission examinations are well publicised. Institutional recruitment is not: an AIIMS senior resident advertisement, an IIT project associate opening or a state university assistant professor notification may be published once on the institution's own website with a three-week window. Those vacancies often have far fewer applicants per post than a headline examination, and they make up the majority of what is listed here.

Checking whether you qualify

Three conditions decide eligibility for almost every vacancy: your educational qualification, your age on the cut-off date, and any category relaxation you can claim. Staying ahead of deadlines

Application windows are short — commonly two to four weeks from publication.
